A fresh wave of violence has struck Akaeze, a community in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claiming the lives of at least seven farmers. The tragic incident occurred on Monday as the victims were ambushed while working on their farmlands.
Eyewitness accounts and images from the scene reveal the devastating impact of the attack, with several bodies left in pools of blood. One victim was found with a deep gash to the neck, nearly severing it.
The attack is believed to be part of a long-standing land dispute between the Akaeze and Umuogwor communities. Residents reported that some bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue, but searches are still ongoing for others who went missing during the attack.
Okoro David, a resident, described the killings as “heartbreaking and senseless,” noting that such attacks have plagued the Akaeze community for over five months. “We appeal to the government and security agencies to intervene immediately. This violence has taken too many innocent lives,” he said.
Another resident, Omezuo, highlighted the precarious conditions under which farmers now operate, often resorting to nighttime farming to avoid attacks. “Our women are assaulted, and our men are attacked with weapons. The situation has left us helpless and desperate,” he lamented.
Authorities have acknowledged ongoing tensions in the area. However, concrete steps to address the violence and prevent further loss of life remain uncertain. This attack adds to a series of clashes tied to land disputes and communal conflicts in Ebonyi State.
