Ebonyi PDP Demands Investigation into Alleged Incident Involving Governor Nwifuru’s Convoy

Date:

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for a comprehensive investigation into an alleged altercation involving security operatives attached to the convoy of Governor Francis Nwifuru after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.

The viral footage reportedly captured a confrontation between members of the governor’s convoy and occupants of a private vehicle along the Centenary City–Chiboy Motors section of the Afikpo–Abakaliki Expressway.

Reports indicate that the incident began after a Toyota Camry allegedly struck a motorcycle rider attached to the governor’s convoy, leaving the rider injured. The situation reportedly escalated, with the civilian vehicle said to have sustained damage during the confrontation.

Reacting to the development, Ebonyi PDP Publicity Secretary, Prince Darlington Peter Onwe, urged the Ebonyi State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Onwe, security agencies should identify all individuals involved, obtain statements from witnesses, and establish the facts to ensure accountability.

The opposition party also called on the Ebonyi State Government to issue an official statement explaining what transpired and disclose the identities of the security personnel involved.

Additionally, the PDP recommended a review of the operational procedures guiding security personnel attached to government convoys, stressing the need to protect the rights and safety of other road users.

Onwe maintained that the public deserves a transparent account of the incident and encouraged eyewitnesses with useful information to cooperate with investigators.

Responding to the controversy, Governor Nwifuru’s Special Assistant on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, said the viral video presented only a portion of the events and did not reflect the full sequence of what happened.

He urged the public to avoid reaching conclusions until investigations clarify the complete circumstances of the incident.

Oketa explained that official convoys, like ambulances, fire service vehicles, and other emergency responders, are expected to move without unnecessary delays because of public safety and security considerations.

He added that motorists are required to obey lawful traffic instructions issued by police officers and convoy officials to facilitate the safe passage of official convoys and reduce the risk of accidents.

The governor’s aide reaffirmed that Governor Francis Nwifuru remains committed to professionalism, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of lives and property.

He further disclosed that the incident is being reviewed while appealing to motorists to remain patient, comply with lawful directives from security personnel, and cooperate with emergency responders in the interest of public safety.
