The inaugural South East Amateur Boxing Championship has commenced in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, with host state boxer Chidiebere Chukwuemeka securing a victory over Ebonyi State’s Chigbo Aguiyi in one of the opening bouts.
The regional boxing tournament, taking place at the Umuahia Township Stadium, attracted participants from states across the South-East as athletes competed for top honours and opportunities for future development.
In another contest, Israel Ogbodo of Enugu State defeated Ayu Jonah of Imo State after an intense bout, earning a unanimous decision from the officiating judges.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Benard Nzeama, a board member of the National Sports Commission (NSC), reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to identifying and nurturing emerging talents in boxing and other sporting disciplines.
According to Nzeama, athletes discovered during the South East Amateur Boxing Championship will receive opportunities for development with the aim of producing future boxing stars for both the region and Nigeria. He also commended the Abia State Government for its efforts in promoting grassroots sports development.
The Nwaobilor Ananaba and Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, explained that the championship was established to uncover and nurture young boxing talents across the South-East.
They noted that Governor Alex Otti remains committed to advancing sports development in Abia State, adding that the tournament could help produce the next generation of Nigerian boxing champions.
The officials further highlighted the role of sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, job creation, social cohesion, and the reduction of youth involvement in criminal and anti-social activities.
Following his victory, Chidiebere Chukwuemeka expressed his ambition to represent the South-East region and Nigeria at international boxing competitions, stating that he remains focused on achieving his goals and avoiding distractions.
The championship is expected to continue with both male and female boxing events as athletes battle for recognition in what organizers hope will become a major platform for talent discovery and sports development in the South-East.
