Ebonyi facility opens as the first of a planned continental network of youth innovation hubs
ABAKALIKI — In a landmark step toward redefining youth-led innovation in Nigeria, One Youth Global on Thursday unveiled its first Innovation Hub at the Main Library Complex of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, declaring the facility a free, fully equipped space where young people can build, collaborate, and develop practical solutions to community challenges.
The opening ceremony, which drew dignitaries, academics, technology partners, students, and development stakeholders, was capped by an official ribbon-cutting performed by Prof. Emmanuel Echiegu, Chief of Staff to the Ebonyi State Government, who represented Governor Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonnia Nwifuru. Guests were subsequently led on a guided tour of the facility by the President of One Youth Global, UcheChukwu Agbo, who outlined the vision behind the Hub.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Agbo stressed the urgent need to create an ecosystem in which African youths are afforded the tools to develop solutions to the problems that exist within their communities — a conviction he said inspired the establishment of the One Youth Innovation Hub.
“The One Youth Hub is essentially a physical innovation and co-creation space designed for young people — especially in places like Abakaliki — to build ideas, collaborate, and create solutions,” Mr. Agbo said.
He described the facility as more than a building, calling it a deliberate response to a long-standing problem on the continent.
“For too long, our young people have had ideas but no platforms, talent but no tools, ambition but no environment to act on it. The One Youth Hub closes that gap. It says to every young person in Abakaliki and beyond: bring your idea, and we will give you the space, the technology, and the network to make it real,” he said.
Mr. Agbo emphasized that the initiative is rooted in the belief that the answers to Africa’s most pressing challenges already exist within its young population.
“We are not waiting for the future to be handed to African youth — we are building it with them, one solution at a time. The biggest tragedy is not that our young people lack ideas; it is that those ideas die in their heads because they have nowhere to bring them to life. That ends here,” he declared.”
Mr. Agbo further stressed that the One Youth Hub is firmly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He said the Hub directly advances SDG 4: Quality Education by providing practical, skills-based learning for young people, while also supporting SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through entrepreneurship, job creation, and the development of innovation infrastructure.
He added that the Hub equally supports SDG 5: Gender Equality through its commitment to inclusive participation, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by leveraging strategic collaborations — providing a space where academia will work alongside NGOs, government, and industry to develop practical, actionable solutions to the problems that face their communities.
Delivering remarks on behalf of Governor Nwifuru, Prof. Echiegu described the Hub as a timely and visionary intervention, commending One Youth Global and EBSU for partnering to create a structured space where young people can develop practical solutions to societal challenges. He pledged the State Government’s continued support for One Youth Global and reiterated the Nwifuru administration’s commitment to enabling environments for skills development and enterprise.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Ebonyi State University, Prof. Ike-Elechi Ogba, during his keynote, emphasized the need to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application. He noted that the Hub would offer students hands-on learning, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration — outcomes he described as essential for producing graduates who are job-ready and solution-driven.
The Head of Job Creation at the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, and National Lead of the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, Mr. Eliezar Ajah, said the Hub should not function as an isolated facility but become deeply embedded in students’ academic and creative lives, describing its placement within the university library as strategic for knowledge sharing and innovation.
Mr. Ajah noted that the Hub will serve as a place not only for capacity building but also for job creation and enterprise development.
“The ultimate yardstick for determining the success of the hub will be the number of solutions that are created within it, and the number of jobs that it creates,” he said.
Several dignitaries delivered goodwill messages during the ceremony. The Vice Chancellor of Coal City University, Prof. Afam Icha-Ituma, observed that the Hub would deepen student engagement with the library and expand access to innovation and academic resources. The Chief Librarian of EBSU, Dr. Victoria Nwali, said the Hub aligned with the library’s mission of fostering creative thinking, research, and collaborative learning.
Co-founder of The Garage, Raymond Chuma-Onwuoku, commended the vision behind the initiative and announced a six-month free software access package for users of the Hub. Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo, the renowned African writer, highlighted the importance of mentorship within university communities, while Coach Pauline Iyke-Ogbo, founder of Read to Lead Africa, pledged book donations and expressed enthusiasm for the hub, and One Youth Global’s forthcoming Spark Nation 3.0 initiative.
Veteran broadcaster and Managing Director of Afia TV, Chief (Sir) Emeka Mba, applauded One Youth Global for what he described as a forward-looking and well-executed initiative, noting that platforms of this kind are exactly what the Nigerian youth landscape needs at this moment. He pledged the support of his organisation to the work of One Youth Global and expressed willingness to partner with the Hub on programming, visibility, and storytelling that amplifies the work of young innovators emerging from the facility.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Dr. Antonia Orie-Arua, Provost, Eastern Oak College of Nursing Sciences; Dr. John Otu, former editor at the Guardian; Prof. NkeChi Emma-Echegu, EBSU Dean of Social Science and Humanities; Rev. Dr. Christopher Aniamaka, State Pastor, Dominion City Ebonyi; inclusive learning and early years education leader, Tracy Jerry-Ugwu, healthcare IT strategist Tomiwa Ogunyomi; Digital Ecosystem Builder, Ikenna Ojimba; and Barr. Melva Uguru, Founder of the Kachem Young Initiative. The opening prayer was delivered by Evangelist Barr. Nnamdi Okezie.
Earlier, in a welcome address, the Director of Programmes at One Youth Global, Mr. Sampson Amulu, described the Hub as a strategic response to the realities facing Nigerian youth. Citing youth unemployment figures and Nigeria’s predominantly young population, he emphasized the need for intentional systems and enabling environments where young people can learn, build capacity, collaborate, and lead.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Agbo announced that the Ebonyi facility is the first among many innovation hubs that will be established by One Youth Global across the continent.
“This is just the beginning. The One Youth Hub here in Abakaliki is the first of many. We are building a network of free spaces across Africa where the lights never go off and the signal never fluctuates — places where a young person’s only limitation will be the size of their imagination.”
The event concluded with participants describing the launch as a significant step in advancing youth empowerment, innovation, mentorship, and collaborative learning in Ebonyi State and beyond. The One Youth Global Innovation Hub is expected to serve as a centre for digital learning, leadership development, and youth-driven innovation for students and young professionals within and beyond Ebonyi State.
