Minister of Works, David Umahi, has urged the Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress to adopt either consensus or direct primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. He emphasized the need for unity, dialogue, and adherence to party discipline among aspirants.
Speaking during ongoing APC stakeholders’ consultations convened by Governor Francis Nwifuru, Umahi clarified that after discussions with President Bola Tinubu and the governor, there is no restriction preventing aspirants from purchasing nomination forms.
He encouraged the governor to facilitate negotiations among aspirants to reach a consensus where possible, while maintaining that direct primaries should be conducted if consensus fails.
Umahi reaffirmed his political alignment with both President Tinubu and Governor Nwifuru, noting that his support is not tied to any individual aspirant but to the leadership of the party. He also stressed that internal democracy and collective effort remain key to APC’s electoral success in Ebonyi.
The former governor highlighted the importance of party unity, stating that collaboration among members is necessary to secure strong electoral victories for APC candidates at all levels.
Meanwhile, several aspirants for the National Assembly and State House of Assembly have reportedly received backing during the stakeholders’ meetings held across the state. The consultations, organized along senatorial zones, are aimed at ensuring a peaceful and coordinated process for selecting party candidates.
Among those endorsed are Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Senator Kenneth Eze, and House of Representatives members Chinedu Ogah and Joseph Nwobasi.
Outstanding decisions regarding some constituencies are expected to be finalized at a concluding stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for later this week in Abakaliki.
