Ebonyi Police Reaffirm IGP’s Directive, Warn Officers Against Misconduct and Rights Violations

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has reiterated the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), urging officers and personnel across the state to maintain professionalism, discipline, accountability, and respect for the fundamental rights of Nigerians.

The charge was delivered by Hope Urunwa-Okafor during a strategic meeting with Heads of Departments, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and other senior officers. The meeting followed a recent engagement between the IGP and the Strategic Management Team of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, the meeting was convened to communicate the Inspector-General’s operational directives while reinforcing ethical policing and professional standards throughout the Ebonyi State Command.

Speaking during the meeting, the Commissioner of Police warned officers against professional misconduct, including extortion, harassment, abuse of office, incivility towards members of the public, and other unethical practices. She stressed that any officer found engaging in such acts would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

CP Urunwa-Okafor also directed senior officers to strengthen supervision within their respective commands, emphasizing that supervisory officers would be held responsible for any misconduct resulting from poor oversight.

With political activities expected to increase ahead of the forthcoming elections, the police boss instructed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to intensify intelligence gathering and sustain intelligence-led operations targeting criminal hideouts in order to prevent crime and enhance public safety across the state.

She further cautioned officers against conducting unauthorized searches of citizens’ mobile phones and other electronic devices without a valid search warrant, describing such actions as a violation of constitutional rights and due process.

The Commissioner concluded by urging all personnel to uphold the image of the Nigeria Police Force through integrity, professionalism, respect for human rights, and courteous service in their interactions with the public.
