The Nigerian Army has recorded a historic milestone with the passing-out parade of the pioneer recruits at the newly established Nigerian Army Training Depot (NATD) in Amasiri-Edda, marking the first time a military training depot of its kind has been established in Nigeria’s South-East region.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, featured the passing-out parade of the 90 Regular Recruits Intake and was attended by the Chief of Army Staff, , who was in Ebonyi State on an official working visit.
The event also witnessed heightened security across Abakaliki, with military personnel deployed at strategic locations as part of arrangements for the Army chief’s visit.
The Nigerian Army Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda becomes the nation’s third recruit training depot, joining the existing facilities in Zaria and Osogbo, and is the first to be located in the South-East geopolitical zone.
The depot is designed to provide foundational military training for civilian recruits, equipping them with combat skills, physical fitness, leadership qualities, discipline and other competencies required for service in the Nigerian Army.
Stakeholders say the establishment of the facility is expected to strengthen military operations in the South-East while contributing to the socio-economic development of Ebonyi State.
Analysts believe the presence of the training institution will stimulate economic activities through increased patronage of local businesses, expansion of hospitality and transport services, growth in housing demand and the creation of employment opportunities for civilians in administrative, maintenance and support roles.
The depot is also projected to attract additional federal infrastructure investments, including improvements in roads, electricity and water supply to surrounding communities.
Beyond its economic value, the facility is expected to foster stronger civil-military relations through community engagement programmes while promoting national integration as recruits from different parts of the country undergo training in Ebonyi State.
Security experts also note that the training depot could enhance the Nigerian Army’s operational capacity in the South-East by improving response to security threats, strengthening manpower development and providing a strategic base for emergency operations and support to civil authorities.
The development comes amid growing federal investments in Ebonyi State, including the ongoing construction of a Nigerian Navy training facility at Amachara Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area.
Observers describe the establishment of the Nigerian Army Training Depot as a significant addition to the state’s strategic institutions, reinforcing Ebonyi’s role in national security and development.
The pioneer recruits were formally inducted into military service at the conclusion of the passing-out parade, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the training institution and the Nigerian Army.
