The Ebonyi State Government has taken a major step toward strengthening healthcare research and disease surveillance with the arrival of a state-of-the-art Electron Microscope for the proposed Virology, Research and Innovation Centre.
The advanced equipment is described as one of the most important scientific installations for the centre, which is being developed to boost biomedical research and diagnostic capacity in Ebonyi State.
Confirming the development, the State Virologist, Euslar Nnenna Onu, said the acquisition represents a significant breakthrough that could position Ebonyi as a leading centre for scientific innovation and biomedical research in the South-East.
The Electron Microscope is equipped to support advanced diagnostic investigations in several fields, including virology, mycology, bacteriology, immunology and parasitology.
Its applications also extend beyond medical diagnostics. The equipment can facilitate specialised research in areas such as plant science, geology and materials analysis, including the identification of substances such as lead.
The latest delivery comes after the first and second batches of laboratory equipment arrived in Ebonyi in June 2026 as part of efforts to equip the facility with modern scientific infrastructure.
When fully operational, the Virology, Research and Innovation Centre is expected to improve disease detection, surveillance and emergency response across Ebonyi State.
The facility will provide capacity for advanced research into emerging and infectious diseases while supporting public health preparedness and specialised training for healthcare professionals, scientists and researchers.
The centre is also expected to reduce the state’s dependence on laboratories outside Ebonyi. By enabling complex diagnostic tests and laboratory analyses to be conducted locally, authorities could achieve faster results while reducing operational and logistical costs.
The Virology, Research and Innovation Centre is currently under construction at Oferekpe in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The project is being positioned as a long-term investment in health security, medical research, healthcare infrastructure and scientific innovation.
The arrival of the Electron Microscope further strengthens Ebonyi State’s efforts to build local capacity for disease diagnosis, biomedical research and public health response under the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
