General Hospital, Ezzamgbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has successfully conducted its first Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), marking a major advancement in specialist healthcare services within the state.
The groundbreaking procedure, used in the treatment of benign prostate enlargement, was carried out on Monday by a team of urologists led by resident physician, Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Edeaja, alongside other healthcare professionals at the facility.
Speaking on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Edeaja disclosed that the patient, identified as Nwabueze Moses, had battled severe prostate enlargement for several years. He explained that previous conservative treatment options had failed, leaving the patient dependent on a suprapubic urinary catheter.
According to him, the TURP procedure was performed without any external incision. Instead, surgeons used a specialized telescope inserted through the urethra to access and remove the enlarged prostate tissue under direct visual guidance.
He noted that the minimally invasive technique significantly reduces blood loss, lowers the risk of infection, and minimizes post-surgical complications when compared to conventional open prostate surgery.
“TURP offers a safer and more effective treatment option for patients with enlarged prostate. It also shortens recovery time, allowing most patients to be discharged within three days, unlike traditional surgery, which may require up to two weeks of hospitalization,” he said.
The hospital attributed the achievement to the Ebonyi State Government’s continued investment in the health sector, particularly efforts aimed at upgrading medical facilities and strengthening collaboration with specialist consultants from within and outside the state.
Hospital management expressed optimism that sustained government support and partnerships with tertiary healthcare institutions would enable the introduction of more advanced surgical procedures across Ebonyi State.
The successful operation represents another milestone in the state’s drive to improve access to quality healthcare and expand specialized medical services for residents.
