The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has urged politicians and other political stakeholders in the state to focus on issues rather than personal attacks as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The union warned that campaigns driven by insults, character assassination and inflammatory remarks could threaten the peace currently enjoyed in Ebonyi.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the council’s congress held last Thursday at the Dr. Sam Egwu Press Centre in Abakaliki. The meeting was presided over by the council chairman, Comrade Nwafor Samson.
According to the communiqué, political actors should conduct their campaigns in line with electoral guidelines and present their policies, programmes and vision to voters instead of engaging in rhetoric capable of heating up the polity.
Beyond politics, the congress also raised concerns over the delay in the distribution of government farm inputs to farmers across the state.
The union appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to ensure timely distribution of the inputs, noting that early access would encourage farming activities, increase food production and strengthen food security.
It further recommended that effective monitoring mechanisms be put in place to ensure that only genuine farmers benefit from the programme.
The congress also drew attention to the peak of the rainy season, advising residents of flood-prone communities to heed warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and other relevant authorities.
Residents were equally urged to avoid blocking drainage channels and waterways, warning that such actions increase the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall.
The NUJ commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for what it described as sustained investments in education and human capital development, particularly through scholarship opportunities for Ebonyi indigenes within and outside Nigeria up to the doctoral level.
The union encouraged the governor to sustain the initiative, describing education as a critical investment in the state’s future.
The congress also appealed to Governor Nwifuru to allocate an alternative parcel of land to the union following the revocation of allocations at the EBSU Pocket Layout, which affected the three hectares earlier acquired by the council for a proposed journalists’ housing estate.
According to the communiqué, the land was purchased through contributions made by members, adding that government intervention would help the union realise the housing project.
It expressed optimism that the resolutions reached at the congress would contribute to peaceful political engagement ahead of the 2027 elections, improved agricultural productivity, effective flood preparedness and the welfare of journalists in Ebonyi State.
