An elderly man identified as Elder Onwe Ubochi has been killed in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, shortly after participating in an endorsement event for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ubochi, a native of Osege Village, Umuogudu Oshia Ngbo, Ohaukwu LGA, was reportedly found dead after attending a prayer session and political endorsement programme on Monday, August 17, 2026.
The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the incident and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing. The Command also pledged to identify and prosecute those responsible, regardless of their status.
The APGA candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, Barrister Tochukwu Ogalagu, has called for a thorough investigation into Ubochi’s death.
Ogalagu described the killing as gruesome and condemned the incident, urging the police and other security agencies to establish what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.
According to Ogalagu, Ubochi was healthy when he attended the APGA endorsement gathering and participated in activities at the event. He reportedly left the venue alone afterwards but later went missing, prompting his family members to begin searching for him.
The APGA candidate alleged that Ubochi may have been attacked while returning home and that his body was subsequently discovered in a stream some distance from the road leading to his residence.
Ogalagu said the incident had been reported to the police, while the deceased’s remains were deposited in a mortuary.
He expressed confidence that the security agencies would conduct a professional investigation capable of uncovering the circumstances surrounding the death.
The APGA candidate also appealed to residents and supporters across the constituency to remain calm and avoid any form of reprisal or action capable of escalating tension in the area.
Ogalagu further alleged that the killing could be linked to political threats reportedly made against individuals in the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, he acknowledged that security agencies must determine the actual motive and circumstances behind the incident.
He called for investigations into any reported threats against residents allegedly targeted because of their support for opposition political parties or candidates.
Ogalagu urged APGA supporters not to be intimidated, stressing the need for political participation to take place without violence, threats or intimidation.
He sympathised with Ubochi’s family and called on political actors in Ebonyi State to promote peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law as preparations for the 2027 elections continue.
