Lions Club Clears Medical Bills for 10 Indigent Children at AE-FUTHA in Ebonyi

Date:

The Lions Club International, District 404A3, has paid ₦1 million to settle the medical bills of 10 underprivileged children at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA), Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The humanitarian intervention benefited children who had already been certified fit for discharge but remained in the hospital due to their families’ inability to pay outstanding medical bills.

According to the organization, the affected children had received treatment for different health conditions, with hospital bills ranging from ₦13,000 to ₦200,000. Some of the patients had reportedly spent between two and six months in the hospital after recovery because their parents could not afford the costs.

Speaking during the visit to the hospital in Abakaliki, the District Governor of Lions Club International District 404A3, Lion Mary Onu, said the initiative was part of the club’s commitment to supporting vulnerable families and improving access to healthcare.

She explained that the organization fully settled the bills of five children while providing financial assistance to five others receiving treatment in the hospital’s pediatric ward.

According to Onu, the intervention reflects the core values of Lionism, which focus on providing practical support and restoring hope to disadvantaged members of society.

“Our mission goes beyond making donations. We are committed to creating meaningful impact by bringing relief, hope, and support to people facing difficult circumstances,” she said.

Onu highlighted the club’s major areas of focus, including healthcare services, childhood cancer advocacy, diabetes awareness, hunger alleviation, vision care, youth empowerment, environmental protection, and disaster response.

She noted that the outreach in Ebonyi State aligns with a recent call by Lion Innocent Ogbonna during a stakeholders’ meeting in Asaba, Delta State, encouraging Lions members across Eastern Nigeria to strengthen humanitarian activities and expand community-based interventions.

The district governor further reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to community development, leadership growth, and collaboration among professionals from different sectors to address societal challenges.

Many of the beneficiaries were drawn from Ebonyi and Cross River states. For several families, the intervention brought an end to months of uncertainty and hardship.

One grateful mother, whose daughter had remained in the hospital long after recovery because of unpaid bills, expressed appreciation to the organization.

“I am deeply grateful to the Lions Club for paying my daughter’s hospital bill. This support has given us a chance to return home after months of being stranded,” she said.

Reacting to the gesture, the Public Relations Officer of AE-FUTHA, Mr. Oji Uzodinma, commended the Lions Club for its generosity and humanitarian service.

He also appealed to philanthropists, corporate organizations, and other well-meaning Nigerians to support indigent patients who are unable to afford medical treatment.

The intervention underscores the growing role of non-governmental organizations in supporting healthcare delivery and providing relief to vulnerable families across Nigeria.
