Three Remanded Over Alleged Attempted Murder and Mob Assault in Ebonyi

Date:

Three individuals have been remanded by a Magistrate Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, over their alleged involvement in a violent mob attack that nearly claimed the life of a woman falsely accused of child abduction.

The suspects — Nwokedi Charles, Ekwunife Chidubem, and Okpala Chiamaka — were arraigned before the Abakaliki Magisterial District Court in connection with an incident that occurred on June 21, 2026, at the International Market in Abakaliki.

According to court documents, the defendants and other suspects who are still at large allegedly conspired to commit attempted murder by leading a mob that attacked a woman identified as Ebede Chisom. Prosecutors alleged that the victim was beaten with sticks and machetes, leaving her with multiple injuries.

The accused persons also face allegations of public humiliation and intimidation after reportedly stripping the victim naked during the assault. The charges were filed under relevant provisions of the Ebonyi State Criminal Code and Internal Security Enforcement laws

During the court session, legal representatives for the three defendants applied for bail. However, the presiding magistrate, Chief Magistrate Donatus Nkwegu, declined the application and ordered that the suspects remain in custody pending further proceedings.

The case was subsequently adjourned until July 14, 2026, for continuation of hearing.

The court proceedings stem from a widely condemned incident at the International Market, Abakaliki, where an angry crowd allegedly attacked Ms. Chisom after she was accused of kidnapping three children.

The Ebonyi State Police Command had earlier arrested the three defendants alongside ten other suspects following the incident.

Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu explained that officers from the Central Police Station responded to a distress call reporting an attempted lynching. Upon arrival, security operatives rescued the victim from the mob and took her into protective custody.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the children in question belonged to the victim’s tenant, Chinyere Okwuchukwu, who had reportedly entrusted them to her care while working at a piggery. Police later confirmed the woman’s explanation after verifying the children’s identities and interviewing their mother.

According to investigators, the misunderstanding began when a woman questioned the victim about the children due to their lack of physical resemblance. Before she could provide an explanation, an alarm was allegedly raised, accusing her of child trafficking, which quickly attracted an aggressive crowd.

Reacting to the incident, Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Hope Urunwa Okafor, condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous example of jungle justice fueled by misinformation and false accusations.

She urged residents to report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands, warning that mob actions often lead to grave violations of human rights and wrongful attacks on innocent citizens.
