The wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State has officially flagged off the distribution of sanitary pads and educational materials to 10,000 schoolgirls across the state in a move aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene, girl-child education, and student welfare.
The initiative, launched in Abakaliki, is part of ongoing efforts to support young girls with essential learning and health materials, especially in underserved communities. Beneficiaries received free sanitary pads, exercise books, writing materials, and other educational supplies designed to improve school attendance and academic performance.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, the Ebonyi First Lady emphasized the importance of menstrual health awareness and equal access to education for girls. She noted that the programme seeks to reduce period poverty, encourage confidence among female students, and create a more supportive learning environment.
According to her, access to sanitary products remains a major challenge for many schoolgirls, forcing some to miss classes during their menstrual cycle. She added that the intervention aligns with broader efforts to empower the girl child and improve education outcomes in Ebonyi State.
Education stakeholders and community leaders who attended the event commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful for adolescent girls across the state.
The distribution exercise is expected to reach students in several public schools and rural communities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to healthcare, education, and women empowerment programmes.
