The Ebonyi State Government has announced that water supply is expected to resume in Abakaliki by Friday, following the arrival and installation of new water treatment equipment at the state’s facilities.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Chinedu Nkah, disclosed this during a media briefing at his office in Abakaliki, explaining that the state had faced disruptions in water production due to the vandalisation of critical infrastructure at the Ezillo Water Scheme.
According to Nkah, engineers are currently working to install the newly delivered treatment materials, with the aim of restoring steady water production and distribution to residents.
He acknowledged concerns over the temporary shortage of water supply, assuring Ebonyi residents that the government remains committed to completing ongoing rehabilitation efforts across major water projects in the state.
“Whoever says there has been no water supply is correct. For some time, we stopped pumping water because of challenges, including the theft of infrastructure at the Ezillo Water Scheme,” he said.
The commissioner stated that the government had invested significantly in rehabilitating major water facilities, including the Ezillo, Oferekpe, Old Abakaliki, Ukawu, and Ishiagu water schemes.
He noted that the Ezillo Water Scheme has reached full completion, while the Oferekpe and Old Abakaliki water projects are nearing completion, with test-running already ongoing at some facilities.
Nkah explained that work is also progressing on pipelines connecting the low lift and high lift sections of the Abakaliki Water Scheme, adding that the facility is expected to become fully operational soon.
He maintained that the government’s approach focuses on long-term solutions, including reticulation and infrastructure upgrades, rather than temporary fixes.
The commissioner further revealed that the suspected individual linked to the destruction of the Ezillo water facilities has been appearing in court, noting that continued vandalism remains a major challenge to the state’s efforts to provide reliable water services.
The Ebonyi State Government expressed optimism that water production from the Ezillo scheme would resume within the week and remain sustainable.
