One person has been killed and three others injured after suspected gunmen attacked the convoy of a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly candidate in Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The attack reportedly occurred around 4 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in Amaezekwe community, targeting the convoy of Rollins Ovu-Unata Offia-Nwali, the NDC candidate for Ezza South State Constituency.
The incident has raised concerns over political violence and security in Ebonyi State as preparations for future elections continue.
The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, who said the command received a distress call reporting a disturbance in Amaezekwe community.
According to Ukandu, police operatives were immediately deployed to the area following the report.
He disclosed that officers who arrived at the scene found four people with gunshot wounds alongside a vehicle that had been set ablaze.
One of the victims was later confirmed dead at a hospital, while the three other victims were receiving medical treatment as of Friday.
The police spokesperson’s account confirms the fatal outcome of the incident, although further details about the circumstances surrounding the attack were not provided in the report.
Reacting to the incident, Offia-Nwali alleged that suspected political thugs attacked his motorcade and set his Toyota Hilux vehicle on fire.
The NDC candidate said he and members of his entourage escaped without injuries during the attack.
He expressed sympathy with those who were affected, particularly the victims and their families, following the loss of life and injuries recorded in the incident.
Offia-Nwali also appealed to young people across Ebonyi State not to allow themselves to be used by politicians to advance personal or political interests.
Emphasising the need to protect young people’s lives, he maintained that political ambitions should never come at the expense of human life.
The attack in Ezza South has drawn attention to concerns about the safety of political actors, their supporters and residents in Ebonyi communities.
The burning of the candidate’s vehicle and the reported shooting of four people underscore the potential consequences of political-related violence for public safety.
The incident also highlights the importance of maintaining peace and ensuring that political disagreements do not result in attacks, injuries or loss of life.
As investigations and further official updates may provide more clarity, residents will be looking to security agencies to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
