A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former presidential aspirant Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has expressed support for Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, amid growing political tensions involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
In a statement released on Thursday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee (INWC) praised Governor Nwifuru for speaking out against what it described as political intimidation, misinformation, and interference allegedly linked to the FCT Minister.
The group said Governor Nwifuru was justified in cautioning Wike against actions capable of creating political instability in Ebonyi State, alleging that the minister had continued to exert influence beyond his constitutional responsibilities in the FCT.
According to the statement, many members of the opposition party share concerns over Wike’s increasing involvement in political matters outside both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, where he previously served as governor.
The faction maintained that Nwifuru’s position reflected widespread dissatisfaction within political circles regarding what it called attempts to manipulate political structures through misinformation, anti-party activities, and the use of President Bola Tinubu’s name for personal political objectives.
The Turaki-led PDP faction further alleged that Wike played a significant role in the circumstances that led former Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi to leave the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It argued that Governor Nwifuru is aware of the political events surrounding Umahi’s departure from the opposition party and suggested that Wike’s actions contributed to the development.
The faction also referenced past allegations reportedly made by Umahi against the FCT Minister, claiming that questions raised over public resources and political conduct have remained unanswered.
Reaffirming its position as an opposition platform, the group dismissed suggestions of any political alliance between the PDP and the ruling APC. It stressed that the party remains committed to democratic values, credible elections, and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The faction also clarified its stance on Ebonyi politics, insisting that Eze Alexander remains the recognised candidate of what it described as the authentic PDP in the state.
Calling for broader support, the group urged political leaders and Nigerians to stand with Governor Nwifuru and others who oppose any actions capable of destabilising political structures across the country.
The statement concluded by encouraging governors and stakeholders to continue speaking against political interference and activities that could threaten peace and stability within their respective states.
