The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected allegations that its members are involved in the illegal procurement, collection or hoarding of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party described the allegation as an attempt to target its members, warning that it could be used to intimidate, harass or unlawfully arrest PDP supporters and officials across the state.
The PDP State Publicity Secretary and spokesperson, Prince Darlington Peter Onwe, made the position known on Wednesday during a press conference in Abakaliki. He said the development was coming at a time of increased political activities in Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Onwe maintained that the PDP remained a law-abiding political organisation and had neither authorised nor supported any activity capable of violating the Electoral Act 2026, guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), or other applicable Nigerian laws.
He therefore dismissed any attempt to link PDP members to alleged illegal activities involving PVCs, insisting that members of the party should not be subjected to punishment without evidence or due process.
The PDP spokesperson also raised concerns over alleged plans to arrest some of the party’s members, saying any action taken outside established legal procedures could violate their constitutional rights.
He called on the Nigeria Police Force, the National Security Adviser (NSA), the Department of State Services (DSS), INEC and relevant human rights organisations to closely monitor political developments in Ebonyi State and ensure that all political activities are conducted within the law.
Onwe further cited an earlier incident at Ikwuator, Idembia, in Ezza South Local Government Area, where he alleged that political thugs disrupted a PDP gathering organised to welcome a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the opposition party. He also claimed that journalists covering the event were affected.
According to him, the PDP has placed its members, party structures and stakeholders on alert while pursuing lawful measures to address any alleged violation of their rights.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and constitutional political engagement and urged the Ebonyi State Government and APC leadership to prioritise issue-based campaigns as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As of the time of filing this report, the Ebonyi State chapter of the APC had not publicly responded to the allegations.
