The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has raised concerns over the safety of his running mate, Patrick Mgbebu, ahead of the 2027 Ebonyi State governorship election.
Odii, through his spokesperson, Emmanuel Igwe, called on security agencies to investigate information concerning an alleged threat to Mgbebu and take necessary measures to ensure his safety.
The PDP governorship candidate also appealed for adequate protection for members of his campaign council, supporters and other political actors as preparations for the February 8, 2027, Ebonyi governorship election intensify.
Mgbebu, a former member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and immediate past representative of Ebonyi State at the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMAFC), was announced as Odii’s running mate about two weeks ago.
His selection followed consultations with PDP stakeholders across Ebonyi State.
According to Odii, Mgbebu’s political experience, personality and connections across different groups in the state were among the factors considered in choosing him as the PDP deputy governorship candidate.
Odii also referenced Mgbebu’s previous political activities within the All Progressives Congress (APC), noting that his decision to join the PDP campaign demonstrated his commitment to contributing to the development of Ebonyi State.
The PDP candidate said the reported security concerns surrounding his running mate should not be ignored, particularly as political activities ahead of the 2027 Ebonyi governorship election gather momentum.
He urged security agencies to examine any credible information regarding threats against political figures and take appropriate preventive measures.
Odii further called on political parties, governorship candidates, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations and security agencies to work collectively to ensure a peaceful electoral process in Ebonyi State.
He said political disagreements should be resolved through constitutional and democratic processes rather than confrontation or violence.
“The people of Ebonyi State deserve an election conducted in an atmosphere of peace, freedom and security. Nobody should be intimidated, threatened or harmed because of his or her political affiliation,” Odii said.
He also urged security agencies to provide adequate protection for political candidates, campaign organisations and supporters, regardless of their political affiliations.
The Ebonyi PDP governorship candidate called on politicians and their supporters to avoid inflammatory statements and actions that could increase political tension in the state ahead of the 2027 election.
Odii reiterated his commitment to pursuing his governorship ambition through constitutional and democratic means, while urging all stakeholders to work towards preserving peace and security across Ebonyi State.
