Umahi Says Federal Road Projects Will End Fatal Accidents on Afikpo Valley Road in Ebonyi

Date:

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has assured residents that ongoing federal road projects in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, will significantly reduce accidents and end recurring deaths linked to the dangerous Afikpo valley route.

Umahi gave the assurance during an inspection of several ongoing federal infrastructure projects across Ebonyi State, including the Onueke Flyover, the Ndibe Beach Bridge connecting Ebonyi and Cross River States, and the Abakaliki–Afikpo Road project.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and the speed of construction by contractors handling the projects.

Speaking during the inspection, Umahi explained that the Federal Government is carrying out major earthworks by cutting through hills and reshaping difficult terrains around Afikpo to create safer and more accessible roads for motorists.

“At Onueke, I inspected the flyover project being executed by Age-Link and I am pleased with the quality, structure, and pace of work,” he said.

He added that approximately 60 percent of the foundation stage is expected to be completed by the end of May, while the entire project is projected for completion before the end of the year.

Umahi also disclosed plans for another flyover project along the Timber Shade axis toward Amasiri, alongside the dualisation of about two kilometres near Akpoha Bridge.

According to him, extensive excavation work is being carried out to eliminate the winding valley road in Afikpo, which has reportedly claimed many lives over the years.

He described the ongoing Abakaliki–Afikpo Road construction as one of the signature infrastructure projects under the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The minister further explained that the road project will serve as a major connection route linking the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway corridor through Cross River and Ebonyi States to Abuja.

Umahi stated that the first phase of the project stretches about 123 kilometres from Ndibe Beach to the Ebonyi–Benue boundary, with an estimated cost of ₦454 billion.

He added that the road will feature reinforced concrete pavement, solar-powered street lighting, and dual carriage sections at key points to improve safety and transportation efficiency.
