NDC Names Ex-Ebonyi Governor Sam Egwu to Lead Presidential Screening Committee Ahead of 2027 Elections

Date:

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has appointed former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator Sam Egwu, as the Chairman of its high-level screening committee for aspirants contesting the presidency, governorship, Senate, and House of Representatives seats ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was confirmed in an official statement released on Tuesday by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu. According to the statement, the 17-member committee will be formally inaugurated at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Senator Sam Egwu, a two-term governor of Ebonyi State and former federal lawmaker, will oversee the screening process for all aspirants seeking elective positions under the NDC platform.

The party also appointed its National Legal Adviser, Reuben Egwuaba, as the secretary of the committee, while Babatunde Ali was named Deputy Chairman.

Other members of the screening panel include Buba Galadima, Mohammed Takori, Daniel Onifade, Ikeddy Isiguzo, Wole Adedayo, Dr. Osusu Osusu, Chief Asukewe Ikoawaji, Prof. Udenta Udenta, Frederick E. Owotorufa, Hannatu Tanko, Dogo Shammar, Sir Henry Obaze, Clement Agiagie, and Fatima Abba.

According to the NDC, the committee is composed of senior party officials, professionals, and members of its National Working Committee. Its mandate is to ensure a transparent and credible screening process for all aspirants contesting in the 2027 general elections.

The development forms part of the party’s broader preparations for the upcoming elections, as the NDC continues to strengthen internal unity and reduce disputes by adopting consensus-based arrangements in several of its primaries across the country.

As political activities intensify ahead of 2027, the party says the screening committee will play a key role in ensuring credible candidates emerge to represent the platform in various elective positions.
