Troops of the Nigerian Army have apprehended a suspected commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), identified as “Calamity,” during a security operation in Ebonyi State.
The arrest was carried out by soldiers under Sector 2 of Operation UDO KA as part of the wider Operation Eastern Sanity. The raid took place in the early hours of April 21, 2026, at a hideout in Nwofe community, Izzi Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 82 Division, the operation followed credible intelligence linking the suspect and his group to a February 26 attack in Okuku-Igbo, Oshimili North LGA of Delta State. The incident reportedly led to the killing of a police officer, injury to another, and the theft of two AK-47 rifles.
Military authorities disclosed that after increased security pressure in Delta State, the suspects relocated to Ebonyi, where they allegedly set up a new base to continue their activities.
Acting on intelligence reports, troops stormed the camp and arrested five individuals, including “Calamity,” described as a key IPOB/ESN operative.
Items recovered during the operation include multiple mobile phones, several keys, and a motorcycle. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with efforts underway to dismantle the wider network and recover additional weapons.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to combating insurgency and criminal activities, noting that the operation highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to restore peace and ensure public safety. Residents were also urged to support security operations by providing timely and useful information.
