Anambra REC, Dr Queen Agwu, Receives Legacy Honour in Ebonyi Community

Date:

Residents of Umuobuna in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, have conferred a prestigious “legacy honour” on the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu, in recognition of her contributions to women empowerment, youth development, and community growth.

The ceremony, held on Monday, reflected a strong blend of cultural values, trust, and progressive community leadership aimed at advancing social development.

Dr Agwu, who has served for years as the Matron of Uyom Umuobuna—the community’s women’s group—was celebrated not just for her position, but for her lasting influence. In a rare cultural gesture, the men of the community convened a general assembly to formally acknowledge her impact and reaffirm their confidence in her leadership.

As part of the honour, the men symbolically entrusted their wives, known as “Uyom,” to her guidance—not as a transfer of authority, but as a mark of trust in her ability to mentor, nurture, and promote stronger family values and improved standards of living.

This public endorsement, considered uncommon in many communities, highlights the deep respect for Dr Agwu’s role in shaping both family life and communal stability.

The event drew participation from men, women, and youths, all united in celebrating her contributions and shared vision for development.

Adding to the impact, her daughter, Dr Ezinne Agwu, announced educational and economic support initiatives. Under the Cletus Ngene-Agwu Educational Foundation, she awarded ₦400,000 in scholarships to four students—each representing a clan in Umuobuna—for the 2026 academic session.

She also revealed plans through the TreasureWells Youth Empowerment Foundation to provide structured skills acquisition programmes for women and their children, alongside start-up support for beneficiaries upon completion.

The event underscored a growing commitment to education, empowerment, and sustainable community development in Ebonyi State.
