A suspected gun attack has claimed the life of a member of the Ebonyi State Neighbourhood Watch, identified as Chidiebere Okpara, in Ugwuachara, Abakaliki Local Government Area.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday in Ugwuachara, a community within the Ebonyi State capital. Residents said the assailants opened fire on the operative multiple times before resorting to stabbing him after the gunshots allegedly failed to inflict fatal injuries.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers repeatedly shot the victim but later used knives to stab him, leaving him dead at the scene before fleeing.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Command said the victim was attacked by suspected gunmen in Ugwuachara, Abakaliki.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, stated that the command has launched a full investigation into the killing. He noted that no suspects have been arrested so far but assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Ukandu reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, adding that investigators are pursuing all available leads to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The killing has heightened concerns over security in Abakaliki, with residents calling for stronger measures to curb violent crimes and improve community safety.
