Mass Closure: Ebonyi Government Shuts 283 Substandard Schools to Raise Education Standards

Date:

In a significant move to enhance the quality of education, the Ebonyi State Government has closed 283 unauthorized and substandard primary and secondary schools across the state over the past two years.

The disclosure was made by the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Paul Nwobasi, during a press briefing held in Abakaliki on Thursday.

According to Prof. Nwobasi, the affected schools were spread across various localities within Ebonyi State. He emphasized that the proliferation of poorly equipped and unaccredited schools posed a serious threat to the state’s educational standards and the future of its children.

“This crackdown is part of our deliberate effort to reform the education sector and ensure that every child receives quality learning in a safe and regulated environment,” the commissioner said.

He urged the proprietors of unapproved schools to liaise with the State Ministry of Education to receive proper guidance on meeting the required standards and obtaining official approval.

As part of the government’s broader initiative to improve infrastructure in public schools, Prof. Nwobasi announced that 39 new classroom blocks are currently under construction in the state’s 13 Local Government Areas. Additionally, 42 model school blocks with modern and aesthetic architectural designs are nearing completion.

“For the primary school sector, we are building 36 classroom blocks — two in each LGA — to ensure widespread access to better learning environments,” he added.

This development underscores Ebonyi State’s commitment to raising educational standards and eliminating illegal institutions that fail to meet acceptable benchmarks.
