Medical Breakthrough: AE-FUTHA Achieves First-Ever IVF Triplet Birth in South-East

Date:

In a landmark achievement for healthcare in Nigeria, the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA) has successfully delivered a set of IVF-conceived triplets, becoming the first tertiary medical institution in the South-East to attain such a feat.

The announcement was made by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Robinson Onoh, during a media briefing held at the hospital premises on Wednesday. The triplets—two boys and one girl—were delivered through caesarean section, weighing 1.8kg, 2.2kg, and 1.7kg respectively. Their birth follows years of infertility challenges experienced by the mother.

Professor Onoh explained that this milestone was made possible by the hospital’s newly established IVF and embryo transfer centre, equipped with high-end technology, including a state-of-the-art embryology machine and a multi-zone incubator. He disclosed that the first round of cases recorded a remarkable 70% success rate, including single births, twin pregnancies, and now triplets.

“This is not just a medical success—it is a beacon of hope for countless families struggling with infertility across the South-East and beyond.”

The Director of the IVF Centre, Professor Brown Ejikeme, stated that the IVF process conducted at AE-FUTHA has shown no known side effects, and that all available appointments have already been booked until December, reflecting high public confidence in the service.

Consultant Gynaecologist and IVF Coordinator, Dr Okechukwu Mbanefo, praised the hospital for investing in advanced reproductive health technology, describing the success as a testament to AE-FUTHA’s commitment to offering world-class fertility care.

Speaking to journalists, the father of the triplets, Mr Anderson Onuh, shared his overwhelming joy, noting that after years of hoping and waiting, his family has finally been blessed with children.

“After years of waiting, we finally have a reason to smile. These triplets are nothing short of a miracle, and we’re forever grateful to AE-FUTHA.”
