The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has honoured the Vice-Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State (AE-FUNAI), Professor Daniel C. Nwachukwu, with an Award of Excellence in Education Leadership.
The award was presented to Prof. Nwachukwu during the 2026 NUJ Ebonyi State Council Press Week held at ReMeritona Hotel and Suites in Abakaliki.
According to the NUJ Ebonyi State Council, the Vice-Chancellor was recognised for his contributions to the development of education, youth advancement and university administration, as well as his more than 26 years of experience within the Nigerian university system.
The recognition also highlights efforts attributed to his administration at AE-FUNAI in areas including academic development, institutional growth, research, innovation and university administration.
Since assuming office, Prof. Nwachukwu has emphasised what the university describes as purposeful leadership, shared responsibility and the development of AE-FUNAI into a research-oriented and globally competitive institution.
His administration has also prioritised improvements in the university’s academic environment, infrastructure, staff and student welfare, while strengthening relationships between the institution and relevant stakeholders.
Presenting the award, the NUJ Ebonyi State Council described Prof. Nwachukwu’s recognition as acknowledgement of his contributions to youth development and the advancement of university education in Nigeria.
The 2026 NUJ Ebonyi Press Week brought together journalists, academics, government officials and other stakeholders. The event provided an avenue to recognise individuals and institutions whose activities have contributed to societal development.
Speaking after receiving the award, Prof. Nwachukwu thanked the NUJ Ebonyi State Council for the recognition, describing it as a renewed call to greater service and responsibility in the education sector.
He said university leadership should be measured by its capacity to create opportunities, advance knowledge, develop people and contribute meaningfully to society.
The Vice-Chancellor dedicated the award to God and his wife, Dr. Nkiru Nwachukwu, whom he acknowledged for her support over the years.
Prof. Nwachukwu further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, research, innovation and infrastructural development, as well as maintaining a conducive environment for teaching and learning at AE-FUNAI.
He also commended the NUJ for its role in promoting responsible journalism and creating platforms for public conversations on issues affecting national development.
The theme of the 2026 NUJ Ebonyi Press Week was “2027: The Ballot, the Truth, and the Future.”
The AE-FUNAI Vice-Chancellor noted the importance of journalism in providing citizens with credible information and supporting informed public discourse as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 electoral cycle.
