The Ebonyi State Government has announced a short-term shutdown of Chuba Okadigbo International Airport to finalize the installation of airfield lighting on the runway.
Aviation Commissioner Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu confirmed the closure after inspecting ongoing upgrades, assuring travelers that flight suspensions will last only a few weeks. Once operational, the new lighting system will enable safer nighttime and low-visibility takeoffs and landings.
Since launching full operations three months ago, the airport has facilitated over 75 commercial and chartered flights. Obichukwu credited Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to modernizing the facility to meet global aviation standards.
Key Project Details:
- 3.1km Runway Lighting: Fully installed, pending connection to the power supply.
- Temporary Flight Pause: Essential for safe electrical integration (under 3 weeks).
- Enhanced Security: Military, police, and trained guards now patrol the runway to prevent vandalism.
- New Fueling Station: A 12,000-liter Jet A1 bowser ensures on-site aircraft refueling.
Obichukwu highlighted the airport’s growing regional appeal, serving passengers from Abia, Cross River, Kogi, and beyond. The Federal Aviation Authority (NCAA) has also commended its operational efficiency.
Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed zero tolerance for criminal activity near the airport, deploying additional security personnel from neighboring states.
