Ebonyi State Government Cautions Residents Against Misusing New Bus Stops in Abakaliki

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government has issued a strong warning to residents of Abakaliki concerning the improper use of recently constructed bus stops across the city.

Chief Victor Uzoma Chukwu, the Commissioner for Environment, urged citizens to maintain the integrity of these facilities and use them strictly for their intended purpose—providing temporary shelter for commuters.

Addressing the press in Abakaliki on Tuesday, Chukwu expressed concern over increasing reports that some individuals were defiling the bus stop areas by engaging in public urination and defecation.

“These structures were installed to offer comfort and protection, especially during adverse weather,” Chukwu explained. “The initiative, championed by Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration, reflects a commitment to improving urban infrastructure. Sadly, a few residents are abusing this gesture by turning the bus stops into makeshift public toilets, which is completely unacceptable.”

Chukwu confirmed he had personally observed commuters making proper use of the bus stops during a recent downpour, highlighting their true purpose. However, he maintained that the ongoing misuse undermines the government’s efforts and poses environmental and health concerns.

He called on the public to take responsibility and help protect state facilities, warning that enforcement measures may follow continued abuse.
