A devastating road crash that occurred on Sunday at Uduma Junction in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has left two people dead—including a nine-month-old baby—and many others injured.
The accident reportedly involved a commercial bus carrying about 25 passengers, including children. Eyewitnesses said the bus lost control while speeding through a sharp curve and collided with an oncoming vehicle, causing it to somersault multiple times.
According to reports, the passengers—all indigenes of Ebonyi State residing in Imo—were returning from a funeral ceremony held in Okporike, Abakaliki, when the crash happened.
The Public Relations Officer of David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH), Uburu, Agwu Nwogo, confirmed the incident. He stated that the hospital swiftly activated its emergency response protocols to manage the situation.
Nwogo revealed that a baby girl and an adult female passenger were declared dead upon arrival, while 23 others sustained various injuries ranging from fractures and deep lacerations to traumatic brain injuries.
“As of today, 18 individuals—including the driver—are receiving medical care at DUFUTH’s Accident and Emergency Unit, Surgery Ward, and ICU. Four patients with minor injuries were treated and discharged,” he added.
An 11-month-old child remains in critical condition due to a severe brain injury and is currently on life support in the Intensive Care Unit.
The hospital’s management has expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate event and assured the public that they are committed to delivering the best possible care to the injured victims.
