The Nzuko Edda, Abakaliki Branch, has urged authorities to ensure the full prosecution of all suspects connected to the alleged killing of four indigenes of Okporojo community in Ebonyi State.
The group made the call on Tuesday after a meeting in Abakaliki, insisting that justice must take its full course before any consideration of clemency or release of the suspects currently facing trial.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief David Nkama, and Secretary, Chief Stanley Ngwu, Nzuko Edda said granting clemency before the conclusion of legal proceedings could undermine efforts toward justice, peace and reconciliation.
The association’s position followed reactions to a communiqué reportedly issued by Amasiri Clan stakeholders and political leaders after their May 6, 2026 meeting at De Baze Hotel, Amasiri, where calls were made for clemency for the accused persons.
Nzuko Edda described such appeals as a potential threat to the judicial process, arguing that the families of victims deserve justice and accountability.
The group expressed concerns over what it called attempts to politicise the matter by seeking the unconditional release of suspects while the case remains before the court.
According to the association, meaningful reconciliation between the affected communities must be based on truth, responsibility and respect for the rule of law.
“Justice cannot be sacrificed for political interests, clan sentiments or emotional appeals. Lasting peace can only exist where accountability and responsibility are upheld,” the group stated.
Nzuko Edda maintained that all individuals linked to the incident should face due legal procedures without interference or pressure.
The association also praised Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, for what it described as his decisive response to the crisis, particularly the arraignment and prosecution of 33 suspects reportedly connected to the killings.
It said the government’s handling of the matter had strengthened public confidence in the justice system and reinforced the principle that everyone is subject to the law.
The group appealed to Governor Nwifuru to remain committed to justice and resist any pressure to release the suspects before the conclusion of their trial.
It noted that despite the painful losses experienced by the Okporojo community and the wider Edda people, residents had remained peaceful due to their confidence in the government’s commitment to justice.
The association recalled that the January 29, 2026 attack allegedly linked to the Amasiri community led to the death of four Okporojo indigenes, with reports of beheading, abductions and destruction of property.
The incident reportedly resulted in the destruction of about 29 houses and displaced several families.
Nzuko Edda described the attack as one of the most disturbing security incidents in Ebonyi State in recent times, stressing that accountability remains essential for achieving lasting peace and security.
