Leading the Charge on Climate Action and Waste Management : ECOBIN Wins 3MTT Hackathon

The Cohort 2 set of the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Program, an initiative of the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy was recently concluded with a Hackathon that held across the 36 states where participants were expected to come up with solutions that addresses real life problems specific to their environment and location.

The hackathon provided a platform for collaborations amongst members of various learning tracks and a chance to solve a real life problem with the technical skills acquired from the 3 months program.

Among the standout projects, The winning project in Ebonyi State at the 3MTT hackathon was ECOBIN, a pioneering waste management solution developed by Mister Success Chukwu and Miss Amarachi Victoria Obaji.

This innovative project aims to address pressing environmental issues by focusing on sustainable practices in waste collection, sorting, recycling, and disposal. It contributes to achieving SDGs 13 (Climate Action) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), with an emphasis on creating a scalable and eco-friendly system that can be replicated in communities across Nigeria.

What set this project apart was its focus on creating a system that is not just practical but sustainable and replicable across various communities.

Mr. Success emphasized that the goal was to offer solutions that could be applied consistently, ensuring both environmental and health benefits.

Despite challenges such as unstable power supply, the team remained resilient and optimistic about the long-term impact of their work.

Mr. Success also called for greater youth empowerment in technical fields to foster innovation and tackle pressing global issues like climate change and water scarcity.

The team expressed gratitude to their supporters, including the Federal Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

Special appreciation was extended to Mr. Uduma Stephen for providing the idea that inspired their project. In Mr. Success’s words, “We are grateful for Mr. Uduma Stephen’s thoughtful contribution, which gave us the idea for ECOBIN. It played a key role in shaping our solution and its potential impact.”

They also acknowledged their community manager, Mr. Israel Okereke; Mr. Chijioke Ekoyo, Director at ALC Spella ICT Hub; and Mr. C.E Charles, Success’s brother, for their unflinching support. Above all, they expressed their gratitude to God for guiding their efforts.
