Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has criticised Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru over his recent warning to local government chairmen ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Idam described Governor Nwifuru as a “miniature Hitler,” accusing the Ebonyi governor of making what he termed an undemocratic and dangerous statement.
The constitutional lawyer spoke in reaction to Nwifuru’s directive that council chairmen in Ebonyi State must ensure victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in their respective local government areas during the 2027 elections.
Nwifuru had reportedly warned that any council chairman who failed to “deliver” his local government to the APC would be removed from office.
Reacting to the development, Idam condemned the governor’s position, describing it as a threat to democratic principles and the constitutional independence of elected local government officials.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Idam said the governor’s remarks were “crassly undemocratic” and should be condemned by Nigerians who believe in democracy.
He alleged that Nwifuru’s public statements frequently contain references to conflict and violence, despite the governor’s constitutional responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of Ebonyi State.
According to Idam, the governor’s alleged directive to council chairmen could create an atmosphere capable of encouraging political intimidation and electoral violence ahead of the 2027 elections.
The lawyer further argued that elected local government officials should not be subjected to political pressure over their performance at the polls.
Idam warned that ignoring such statements for political reasons could worsen security concerns in Ebonyi State as the 2027 general elections approach.
He said political threats of this nature could potentially embolden acts of intimidation, violence and other forms of electoral misconduct at the grassroots.
The constitutional lawyer also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to strengthen measures aimed at regulating political campaigns and preventing electoral incitement ahead of the 2027 elections.
He urged electoral authorities and relevant stakeholders to ensure that political actors adhere to democratic principles and avoid statements capable of threatening peace and security during electioneering.
The controversy comes as political activities begin to intensify ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with parties and political actors positioning themselves for the upcoming polls.
