Ebonyi Police Restrict Movement as Security Operatives Deploy Ahead of August 22 LG Elections

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has intensified security preparations ahead of the August 22, 2026 Local Government Area (LGA) elections, deploying personnel to polling units, strategic locations and other critical areas across the state.

The deployment is aimed at ensuring the safety of voters, electoral officials, journalists and residents before, during and after the Ebonyi State local government elections.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, said the operation was carried out under the direction of the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa-Okafor, in collaboration with other security agencies.

According to the command, security personnel have been positioned across the state’s 13 local government areas to prevent violence and maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.

As part of the security measures, the Ebonyi State Police Command announced a statewide restriction of movement on election day, scheduled to take effect from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 22.

However, the restriction does not apply to accredited election officials, journalists, election observers, healthcare workers, emergency responders and other individuals authorised to perform essential duties.

The police command also warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against actions that could disrupt the peaceful conduct of the 2026 Ebonyi local government elections.

Authorities specifically cautioned against electoral violence, intimidation, inflammatory statements and other forms of electoral misconduct, stressing that offenders would face the appropriate legal sanctions.

The command urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security personnel and obey all lawful directives during the election period.

Voters were equally encouraged to report suspicious movements, security threats and emergencies to the relevant authorities.

The Ebonyi State Police Command assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place to facilitate a safe, peaceful and orderly local government election across the state.
