Northern Youth Council Gives Dave Umahi Seven-Day Ultimatum Over Mary Habila’s Death, Threatens Nationwide Protest

Date:

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, demanding that he step aside following the death of 26-year-old physiotherapist Mary Habila.

The youth group warned that it would stage nationwide protests if its demands are not addressed within the stipulated period.

In a statement signed by its National President, Isah Abubakar, the council called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately suspend Umahi to allow what it described as an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.

The NYCN also urged the Nigeria Police Force to invite and question the minister, arguing that a thorough criminal investigation is necessary to ensure justice and public confidence.

According to the council, reports indicate that Mary Habila died at Umahi’s private residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. It said the circumstances surrounding her death have sparked widespread concern and raised questions that require an impartial investigation..

The group further demanded an independent autopsy to establish the exact cause of death and determine whether any criminal act was involved. It insisted that any investigation perceived to be influenced by interested parties would undermine public trust.

The council gave the Federal Government seven days to suspend the minister and commence what it described as a credible and unbiased investigation. Failure to act, it said, would trigger sustained nationwide protests involving its members and allied civil society organisations.

The planned demonstrations, according to the NYCN, would take place in Abuja, Kaduna, Ebonyi State, and other parts of the country until its demands are met.

In the statement, the council expressed concern over the case, stating that a serving cabinet minister should not remain in office while facing allegations that require criminal investigation. It argued that stepping aside would allow investigators to carry out their duties without interference.

The group also maintained that while it noted Umahi’s public support for an autopsy, the examination should be conducted independently and, if necessary, observed by international experts to ensure credibility and determine the true cause of Mary Habila’s death.
