The Ebonyi State Government has summoned the contractor handling the Iziogo Agbaja Tunnel Project to explain delays and concerns over the quality of work, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that all public infrastructure projects meet approved standards.
The Commissioner for Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Hon. Sunday Inyima, issued the directive during a statewide inspection of ongoing government projects on Monday. He warned that contractors who fail to meet contractual obligations or deliver substandard work would face appropriate sanctions.
According to Inyima, the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru remains committed to delivering durable infrastructure and will not tolerate unnecessary project delays or poor workmanship.
He stressed that every contractor engaged by the state government must execute projects according to approved specifications and within agreed timelines.
“The Ministry will not hesitate to recommend sanctions against any contractor whose performance falls below expectation. Every project must be completed to specification and within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
During the inspection, the commissioner expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Nwezenyi Flyover Project, describing the pace and quality of construction as commendable.
He noted that the project aligns with Governor Nwifuru’s vision of expanding quality infrastructure to improve transportation and economic development across Ebonyi State.
The inspection team also visited the Onuenyim Bridge Project, where Inyima highlighted the bridge’s economic and strategic importance.
According to him, the bridge will strengthen connectivity between Ebonyi and Benue states, facilitate easier movement of people and goods, and enhance interstate trade.
However, concerns were raised at the Iziogo Agbaja Tunnel Project, where the commissioner directed the contractor to appear before the Ministry of Project Monitoring and Evaluation to account for the slow pace of work and observed construction deficiencies..
Other projects inspected during the monitoring exercise included the ongoing internal road construction at Oferekpe, the University of ICT project, the ultra-modern building under construction at General Hospital, Oferekpe, and the 12-kilometre Iziogo–Ogbaga–Randa Bridge Road project.
The inspection team also included the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Engr. Chukwuma Nwiboko, and the Special Assistant, Hon. Ajah Philemon, who joined the commissioner in assessing the progress of the projects across the state.
