The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has cautioned residents of Ezza Umuhuali, Ezillo, and Nkalagu communities in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State against the destruction of electricity transmission facilities.
TCN described the vandalism of power installations as a major threat to electricity supply, public safety, and Nigeria’s development, warning that such acts could lead to prolonged blackouts and economic losses.
The General Manager, Transmission, Enugu Region, Dr. Thomas Inugonum, issued the warning during a community sensitisation programme held at Ezza Umuhuali Town Hall.
The engagement brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and journalists to discuss ways of protecting transmission infrastructure located within the communities.
Dr. Inugonum said the initiative was aimed at improving cooperation between TCN and host communities to safeguard critical national assets.
He listed major threats to electricity transmission infrastructure to include vandalism of 330kV and 132kV transmission lines, illegal construction along transmission corridors, excavation around tower foundations, trading activities under power lines, and bush burning close to tower bases.
According to him, attacks on transmission facilities have increased concerns nationwide, resulting in power outages, financial losses, and safety risks.
He recalled an incident in July 2025 where a suspected vandal was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to dismantle Tower 34 on the Nkalagu-Abakaliki 132kV transmission line in Ezillo. The suspect reportedly died while others involved escaped.
The TCN official also mentioned a May 2026 incident where community vigilantes and youths in Ezza Umuhuali arrested two suspected vandals accused of removing parts of Towers T15, T16, and T17 along the same transmission line.
He noted that the stolen tower components were sold to illegal scrap dealers despite their high value.
Dr. Inugonum warned that continued attacks on power infrastructure could result in collapsed transmission towers, widespread electricity failure, and increased government spending on repairs instead of new power projects.
He disclosed that TCN recently recorded the destruction of six transmission towers along the Lafia-Api transmission line, with more towers reportedly damaged shortly afterwards.
The General Manager explained that transmission towers are expensive assets, with each tower costing about $330,000 to purchase and install, adding that replacing vandalised equipment places a heavy burden on public funds.
He further warned residents against building houses, markets, or other structures within transmission rights-of-way, stating that the safety corridor for 132kV lines extends 15 metres on both sides, while 330kV lines require 25 metres on either side.
According to him, activities around transmission lines expose residents to serious dangers, especially during faults or failures.
He referenced a 2024 transmission line incident in Ihamufu, Enugu State, which contributed to prolonged electricity disruptions in parts of northern Nigeria, highlighting the importance of protecting transmission routes.
Dr. Inugonum urged residents to report suspicious movements around power installations to TCN, NSCDC, or the police. He also called on community leaders and traditional rulers to educate young people about the dangers of vandalism.
The traditional ruler of Ezza Umuhuali Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Patrick Nwafor Udoku, praised TCN for organising the awareness campaign, saying it would help protect lives and prevent future incidents.
Eze Udoku, an electrical engineer, assured the company of the community’s support in protecting power infrastructure and helping security agencies identify those responsible for vandalism.
The President General of Ezza Umuhuali Town Union, Chief Solomon Nweke, also commended local security efforts that led to the arrest of suspected vandals.
He urged TCN to continue partnering with community leaders and called for the prosecution of arrested suspects.
The sensitisation programme is part of TCN’s nationwide effort to promote community involvement in protecting electricity transmission facilities across Nigeria.
Residents who attended the event pledged to work with security agencies and TCN to safeguard power installations serving Ebonyi State and the country.
