An Ebonyi-based political advocacy group, the Ebonyi Political Think-Tank, has raised concerns over an alleged threat against the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru.
The group has petitioned security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and Nigerian Army, over a comment attributed to the governor during an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Abakaliki.
In a statement signed by its coordinator, Emmanuel Nwobo, the group alleged that Governor Nwifuru used the phrase “consume” while referring to individuals allegedly working against his administration and the APC in the state.
The comment was reportedly made while the governor reacted to claims of a political arrangement involving the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the PDP ahead of the 2027 Ebonyi State governorship election.
The group described the statement as “troubling” and argued that such remarks from a state governor could threaten democratic processes and political stability.
According to the think-tank, it was concerned that Governor Nwifuru allegedly accused a federal appointee from his own party of supporting the opposition.
The organisation also criticised the governor’s administration, claiming that residents were dissatisfied over issues including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic hardship.
The group further alleged that the Abakaliki rally, which was organised in support of President Bola Tinubu, witnessed some attendees expressing support for Peter Obi, describing it as a sign of growing political dissatisfaction in Ebonyi.
Citing constitutional provisions on freedom of association and political participation, the think-tank maintained that any perceived threat from a state leader should be taken seriously by relevant authorities.
It called on security agencies to document and investigate the governor’s statement, warning that the governor should be held accountable if any harm comes to the PDP governorship candidate, campaign officials, supporters, or their families.
The group emphasised that the 2027 Ebonyi governorship election should be decided through a peaceful electoral process and urged residents to remain calm while participating in democratic activities.
