Chief Henry Udeh has been elected as the Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Ebonyi State following a consensus-driven congress held at the party secretariat in Abakaliki.
The emergence of Udeh is seen as a strategic step by the party to strengthen its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
The state congress, which brought together party stakeholders and members from across Ebonyi, ratified his appointment through a unanimous voice vote. The motion for a consensus arrangement was moved by Comrade Christian Mayor Iduma and seconded by Mrs. Priscilla Ijeoma Chukwu, receiving full backing from attendees.
Other members of the State Executive Committee were also retained, including State Secretary Innocent Igiri, reinforcing continuity in the party’s leadership as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
Prominent party figures present at the event included the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ebonyi, Chief Splendor Oko-Eze, and the party’s 2023 House of Representatives candidate for Abakaliki/Izzi Federal Constituency, Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security operatives, and representatives of the party’s national leadership monitored the exercise to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines.
Speaking after the congress, Oko-Eze described the successful conduct of the ward, local government, and state congresses as a major achievement for the party in Ebonyi, expressing confidence in the LP’s chances in the 2027 elections.
Similarly, Dr. Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh praised the peaceful process, noting that it reflects the party’s discipline and unity, in contrast to internal challenges affecting other political parties. He urged members to remain focused on strengthening the party’s grassroots appeal.
In his acceptance speech, Udeh promised to lead with transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability. He emphasised the importance of grassroots participation and assured members that their voices would be reflected in decision-making.
He also highlighted integrity and political education as key pillars of his leadership, stating that the party must distinguish itself through discipline and responsible governance.
On preparations for the 2027 general elections, Udeh disclosed that the state chapter is awaiting official guidelines from the national leadership before commencing primary election processes.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to internal democracy, he stressed that candidates would be selected based on popularity and acceptance among the people rather than financial influence.
Udeh expressed optimism about the party’s future, noting that the Labour Party aims to emerge as a strong political alternative in Ebonyi State and across Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Deputy National Woman Leader, Mrs. Priscilla Ijeoma Chukwu, described the congress as peaceful and well-organised, dismissing claims of division within the state chapter and affirming party unity.
Party members who attended the congress expressed confidence that the new leadership will strengthen the party’s grassroots mobilisation and improve its chances in future elections.
