Ebonyi State finished in 5th position at the maiden South-East Open Scrabble Championship held in Umuahia, Abia State, missing out on a podium finish despite a competitive outing.
The regional tournament saw Abia State emerge champions after recording 18 wins and one draw out of 22 games. Anambra State followed in second place with 16 wins and one draw, while Imo State secured third position with 14 wins.
Enugu State placed fourth, leaving Ebonyi State at the bottom of the five participating teams in the competition.
The championship, which brought together scrabble players from across the South-East region, was formally declared closed by the Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs Jane Igwe.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the commissioner commended the participating athletes for their discipline and competitive spirit throughout the tournament.
Also addressing participants, Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George, appreciated the players for their turnout and noted that the event helped uncover emerging talents within the region and across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament, Chinedu Thorpe, encouraged Nigerian youths to consider scrabble as a productive career path capable of positively engaging their energy.
