The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the death of two brothers following a fatal road accident on New Year’s Day in Obegu-Aba community, Ebonyi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The tragic incident occurred at about 7:40 a.m. on January 1, 2026, along the Obegu-Aba–Ogbaga Road, involving a Toyota Corolla car and a commercial motorcycle.
According to police reports, the victims—both aged 19—were riding on a motorcycle when they collided with the Toyota Corolla. The motorcycle rider was identified as Mgbebu Elijah, who was conveying Mbam Chidera at the time of the crash.
Police spokesperson in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene and rushed the injured victims to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA), where medical personnel later pronounced them dead.
“The driver of the Toyota Corolla fled the scene immediately after the accident,” Ukandu stated, adding that the police have launched a manhunt to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
He assured residents that investigations are ongoing and urged anyone with useful information to assist the police in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, reckless driving, and hit-and-run accidents in Ebonyi State, especially during festive periods.
