World Suicide Prevention Day: NOA Raises Awareness on Suicidal Behaviours in Nigeria

Date:

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has joined the global community to mark the 2025 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), emphasizing the urgent need to address suicidal behaviours and break the stigma surrounding mental health in Nigeria.

Speaking in Dutse, the Jigawa NOA Director, Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, stressed that suicide is preventable, urging Nigerians to foster compassion, open dialogue, and stronger support systems for those struggling with mental health challenges.

Every year, more than 720,000 lives are lost globally to suicide, leaving devastating impacts on families and communities. Tijjani noted that by raising awareness, encouraging professional help, and promoting kindness, Nigerians can help reduce suicide rates.

“Let us check in on family, friends, and neighbours. Sometimes a simple question can save a life,” Tijjani said, calling for patience, non-judgmental listening, and the use of “words that heal.”

The NOA highlighted that World Suicide Prevention Day, commemorated annually on September 10, is not only a day of remembrance but also of hope, unity, and commitment to mental health awareness.

The agency encouraged Nigerians to seek professional help through doctors, counsellors, and hotlines, while also sharing information on where support can be found.

“Together, we can change the narrative, break harmful myths, and stand against stigma. Every life matters,” Tijjani added.
