Ebonyi State Governor, , has faced criticism following comments described as “offensive” by the Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO).
The controversy followed remarks allegedly made by the governor during an event in Abakaliki where former Ebonyi State Governor moved a motion endorsing the re-election bid of President and Governor Nwifuru.
Nwifuru was quoted as saying that no one should “push” the government because it had the capacity to deal with anyone perceived as challenging it.
Reacting to the statement, NYO Deputy National President, Nasir Doka, expressed concern, describing the comment as inappropriate and potentially capable of being interpreted as threatening or intimidating, especially among young Nigerians.
Doka stressed that statements made by elected officials carry significant weight, noting that governors hold constitutional responsibilities beyond political leadership, including maintaining peace and public trust.
According to him, Governor Nwifuru should clarify who he was referring to and what actions he considered as “trying” the government.
The organisation called on the Ebonyi State Governor to publicly explain the intent behind his remarks to address concerns and reassure residents of the state that democratic freedoms and citizens’ rights remain protected.
The NYO also urged the governor to reaffirm his commitment to political tolerance, freedom of expression, and peaceful democratic engagement regardless of political differences.
The group further appealed to security agencies to remain watchful and ensure that political statements do not fuel intimidation, harassment, or unrest.
It also encouraged political leaders across Nigeria to adopt responsible communication and avoid remarks that could increase political tension.
The organisation called on Ebonyi residents, particularly youths, to remain peaceful and continue supporting dialogue and democratic values.
