The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), formerly known as the Nigerian Prisons Service, has officially dismissed Officer ASC 1 Efe Onakpoya for taking unauthorized photographs of an inmate at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, and sharing them online.
In a statement issued by the NCoS Spokesman, Abubakar Umar, the Service refuted circulating reports alleging that the officer had taken an inmate out of custody for a conjugal visit and was subsequently pardoned by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Board (CDCFIB), while a whistleblower faced dismissal.
Umar clarified, “The report in question is false and deliberately crafted to mislead the public and damage the image of the Nigerian Correctional Service. The truth is that ASC 1 Efe Onakpoya, with service number 57790, was found guilty of professional misconduct after an internal investigation. He was dismissed for taking unauthorized images of inmate Ibuchi Okoro Eze within the Barracks of the Afikpo Custodial Centre and publishing them on the internet.”
Additionally, the Service denounced the dismissed officer’s further allegations, including claims that an inmate was allowed out of the facility for private encounters. “Such accusations are baseless and aimed at tarnishing the integrity of the Service,” Umar emphasized.
He reiterated the NCoS’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and integrity, affirming that unethical conduct will not be tolerated within the institution.
