On April 22, 2025, Ebonyi State achieved a significant milestone in its healthcare delivery system with the official inauguration of the Ebonyi State Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (EBSEMSAS). This new initiative marks the beginning of enhanced emergency medical response across the state.
The newly launched system includes state-of-the-art emergency ambulances strategically stationed in all 13 Local Government Areas. These ambulances are equipped to handle urgent medical needs and referrals from Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs). Residents can now access life-saving support by simply dialing the emergency number 112. The most impressive part of this service is that the ambulance services and the first 42 hours of medical treatment are completely free of charge.
In addition to emergency response services, oxygen cylinders have been supplied to selected PHCs and General Hospitals across the state. Each senatorial zone now has an oxygen plant for continuous refilling and supply. Healthcare workers, especially Officers-in-Charge (OICs) at PHCs, will also receive training on the proper use and handling of oxygen equipment to ensure patient safety and efficient service delivery.
This major healthcare reform is a direct result of the dedication to improving the health system in Ebonyi State. The state government’s commitment to providing accessible, quality healthcare for residents has taken a giant leap forward with this initiative.
