Ebonyi State is on the path to enacting a law that will establish a Disability Rights Commission to safeguard the welfare and rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs). The proposed legislation recently received approval from the State Executive Council and is now set to be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for consideration.
Hon. Solomon Azi, the Commissioner for Grants and Donor Agencies, emphasized the importance of the bill in ensuring equal opportunities for PWDs. According to him, the law will not only provide legal backing for their rights but also grant them access to various grants and support programs that were previously out of reach due to the absence of such a framework.
For over a decade, disability rights advocates have pushed for this law to be enacted. Oluchi Nwite, a leading voice in the campaign and Project Lead at the Hope Inspired Foundation for Women and Youth with Disabilities, expressed optimism that the current administration would see the bill through to completion.
If passed into law, the Ebonyi State Disability Rights Commission will oversee policies aimed at improving the quality of life for PWDs, fostering inclusivity, and promoting social protection.
