The House of Representatives has initiated a probe into allegations that Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) President, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, was abducted and unlawfully detained.
The move follows a formal petition submitted by the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), an influential Igbo youth organization. The petition was presented during a House plenary session by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency, Imo State.
Concerns Over Ethnic Clashes and Leadership Response
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, OYC leaders detailed how ethnic violence in Amegu Nkalagha Tshielu, Ebonyi State, on February 2, 2025, led to over 20 casualties and widespread property destruction.
Following the incident, Comrade Igboayaka issued a statement urging the Ebonyi State Government to take immediate action against the escalating presence of herdsmen in the region. However, his subsequent arrest has sparked outrage, with the youth group calling it an attempt to silence their leadership.
Demands for Unconditional Release
The OYC is urging lawmakers to:
- Secure the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Igboayaka.
- Ensure lawful prosecution if charges exist, rather than illegal detention.
- Prevent any form of intimidation against OYC members.
Hon. Ugochinyere emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating that the House Committee on Public Petitions will oversee the investigation.
