The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a member of the state’s Neighbourhood Watch, formerly known as Ebubeagu, following an attack by suspected gunmen in Abakaliki.
The deceased, identified as Chidiebere Okpara, was reportedly attacked on Thursday evening at Ugwuchara in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed that the attack occurred at about 8:30 p.m. He stated that the command has launched a full-scale investigation into the killing, although no arrests have been made.
According to the police spokesperson, security operatives are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“The investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to tracking down the perpetrators. The command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property across Ebonyi State,” Ukandu said.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, alleged that the victim was ambushed while carrying out his official duties. The source claimed the attackers opened fire on the operative before allegedly assaulting him with machetes when the gunshots failed to immediately kill him.
The assailants reportedly fled the scene after the attack.
The eyewitness added that the motive behind the killing remains unclear and appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The incident has heightened concerns over security in parts of Ebonyi State, with residents urging law enforcement agencies to strengthen measures against violent attacks.
