NDIC Strengthens Financial Literacy, Deposit Protection Awareness in Ebonyi Schools

Date:

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has intensified efforts to promote financial literacy and deposit protection among secondary school students in Ebonyi State as part of activities marking the 2026 Global Money Week.

The awareness programme was held at Urban Model Secondary School, Abakaliki, where students and staff received practical lessons on personal finance, responsible money management, savings, and the importance of banking with licensed financial institutions.

Speaking during the event, NDIC Principal Manager for Communication and Public Affairs, Mr. Toke Afolayan, said the initiative was designed to equip young Nigerians with the financial knowledge needed to make informed decisions while strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s banking sector.

According to him, the campaign, themed “Small Money Talks,” also provided an opportunity to educate students on the corporation’s core responsibilities, particularly protecting bank deposits and supporting financial system stability.

Afolayan explained that financial literacy empowers individuals to make informed choices about saving, investing, budgeting, and spending wisely.

He encouraged students to develop healthy financial habits by prioritising their needs, avoiding unnecessary debt, and embracing disciplined saving.

“Financial literacy gives people the knowledge to make sound financial decisions. With the right financial education, individuals can confidently choose secure banking options instead of keeping money outside the formal financial system,” he said.

Also addressing participants, NDIC Senior Manager Shehu Umar-Mohammed explained that the corporation protects depositors by providing insurance coverage for funds kept in licensed banks and other insured financial institutions across Nigeria.

He added that the NDIC works closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to maintain financial stability, including supporting mergers and acquisitions where necessary, while assuring participants that the deposit insurance scheme has continued to strengthen public confidence in the country’s banking industry.

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, represented by Mr. Igwe Nwuruku, commended the NDIC for bringing the financial literacy campaign to students in the state.

Similarly, the Principal of Urban Model Secondary School, Mr. Paul Odigbo, praised the corporation’s initiative, describing it as a valuable investment in helping young people develop lifelong financial management skills.

The programme forms part of NDIC’s nationwide drive to improve financial inclusion, encourage responsible financial behaviour, and raise awareness of deposit insurance among young Nigerians.
