Ebonyi Community in Crisis After Killing of Fabian Okonkwo, Residents Demand Justice

Date:

There is growing tension in Ihie Autonomous Community, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, following the killing of a community member, Fabian Okonkwo.

Okonkwo was reportedly killed on April 16, 2026, by suspected assailants after allegedly receiving threats to his life. The incident has triggered protests and calls for a thorough investigation by residents and members of his kindred.

Reports indicate that the deceased and other members of the Umunkpumente Kindred were holding a meeting when armed attackers invaded the gathering. Okonkwo was killed during the attack, while several others sustained injuries.

Family members and victims of the attack alleged that the killing was linked to previous threats issued against Okonkwo. They have appealed to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, the state Commissioner of Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

The crisis reportedly intensified after members of the Umunkpumente Kindred submitted a petition requesting an investigation into the murder and the arrest of individuals allegedly connected to the incident.

Chairman of the Umunkpumente Kindred, Christopher Okonkwo, alleged that before his death, Fabian Okonkwo had sought approval to bury his late in-law on his property at Ekembe, Ihie Autonomous Community.

He claimed that after informing the President-General of the community, Chijoke Ume, about the burial plans, the arrangement was opposed. According to him, the deceased later sought approval from the traditional ruler of Ihie Autonomous Community, Eze Gabriel Okoro, who granted permission after confirming ownership of the land.

Christopher alleged that shortly after receiving approval, gunmen invaded Fabian Okonkwo’s residence in the early hours of April 16 and killed him.

He stated that the circumstances surrounding the killing suggested a targeted attack, as no property was reportedly taken from the victim.

According to him, after weeks without progress in the investigation, the kindred petitioned Governor Nwifuru and the Commissioner of Police, leading to the arrest of the community’s President-General, Chijoke Ume, and his secretary, Kenneth Kalu.

He further alleged that pressure was later mounted on members of the kindred to withdraw the petition and secure the release of the arrested individuals.

Christopher claimed that on June 5, 2026, some youths allegedly invaded his residence while he was away and damaged his belongings. He added that a warning was allegedly delivered to him through his uncle’s wife, Mrs. Kate Irochi.

He also alleged that on June 7, 2026, a meeting held by members of the kindred to discuss support for Fabian’s family was disrupted when over 100 youths allegedly stormed the venue and attacked participants.

The incident reportedly left about 10 people injured, with motorcycles damaged and a shop allegedly vandalised.

Another victim, James Ifeanyi, the Financial Secretary of the kindred, accused some youth leaders and a Special Assistant to the Local Government Chairman of being involved in the attack.

He alleged that the attackers carried dangerous weapons and that the violence was intended to frustrate investigations into Fabian Okonkwo’s death.

Responding to the allegations, the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Chief Emmanuel Ajah, said the matter had been reported to the police and investigations were ongoing.

The Police Public Relations Officer of Ebonyi State Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrest of the community President-General and his secretary, adding that peace had been restored in the area.

Ukandu urged residents to allow security agencies complete their investigation rather than resort to violence.
